About Us

Bringing together scientists, researchers, experts and theatre practitioners, Theatre of Debate produces plays reaching varied audiences, helping them reflect on some of the social and ethical issues posed by recent advances in science and technology.

No other theatre company is as committed to bringing science and art together through the performing arts (and with a 30-year track record) to engage young people and adults in informed debates about resulting moral questions. It is ever more essential in today’s uncertain world to create theatre that engages audiences to understand research, how it impacts our lives and changes the world, especially in relation to COVID, pandemics, climate change and AI (Artificial intelligence).

Built on the legacy of the Y Touring Theatre Company, established in 1989 by Nigel Townsend, Theatre of Debate was set up as an independent company in 2015, to become a space for conversation and reflection on today’s key issues, ranging from genetics, to patient involvement in research, all the way through to oral health in the North of England.

Theatre of Debate’s philosophy is to look at complex and sensitive issues, and use theatre to engage an audience ‘head and heart, emotionally and intellectually. After the performance, a space for debate is opened, in which the actors often remain in-character, allowing the spectators to take a step back and reflect on the issues raised during the play.

We have developed a selection of project packages, which offer you and your team, the opportunity to screen a film of a live performance and facilitate the debate yourself with facilitator notes and research resources.

The preparatory notes, the play, the debate and resources have all been created in consultation with researchers, scientists and other appropriate experts.

What does each project offer?

  • A set of pre screening questions to capture what your audience know and feel about the subject matter before watching the film
  • Essential information about the area of research that the TOD production explores
  • A film of the live drama, which includes subtitles (60 minutes)
  • Clips from the film to stimulate debate
  • Extracts of dialogue from the film clips
  • A set of questions/statements so that you can assess what your audience have learnt and whether or not their attitudes have changed
  • Access to useful articles regarding the issues raised
  • Cast interviews
  • Playwright interviews
  • Production interviews
  • Audience interviews
  • Workshop illustrations
  • Image gallery with stills taken from the production

Please note: All of our work is underpinned by rigorous information gathering, consultation and collaboration with a wide range of relevant experts who enable the creation of plays, associated debates and educational resources, and as a result, the resources may differ across projects.
